Educated Bradford Grammar School and Manchester University. M.A. (French and German)
Married 1960, two grown-up sons.
   
Since 1952: Broadcast regularly in plays, documentaries and poetry readings from Leeds, Manchester and Pebble Mill.
1962-1978 Worked as an actor/director in provincial rep., at Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Scarborough, Chester, Oldham and Crewe. Resident co-director and actor at the Library Theatre, Manchester, 1967-74
 
Played Brer Rabbit, Othello, Androcles, Macbeth, Joxer Daly, Richard III,Sir Thomas more, Hamlet, et al.
Directed Pinter, Shaw, Shakespeare, Orton, Moliere, Coward, Simon, Storey, Ayckbourn, Brecht.
1978-1994 Member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, at Stratford, the Aldwych, the Barbican and on several national and international tours.
